Churchtown Primary entered in to a Basketball tournament for the first time last week and the mixed Year 5 and 6 A team of girls and boys won! Not only that, but the extremely strong B team, also made up of mixed children from Years 5 and 6, came an excellent third.
Miss Lucas had set Mr Slater the challenge of training the squad of 13 players for just one week before the tournament was due to be played. All the children committed fully to a coaching session on the MUGA each lunch time. Mr Slater was impressed with the energy, enthusiasm, natural sporting talent and competitive spirit shown by all. Everyone responded well to the coaching and we set off in the mini bus to the venue at Birkdale High School with Mrs Stephenson and hopes were high.
Competing as part of a six team tournament, Churchtown A and B played each other first, with the A team just taking the well contested match.
Conversations with other teachers soon demonstrated that the other schools present had been playing basketball for a lot longer than our children, some since the start of the school year and some since last year! But despite our relative lack of basketball experience, talent won through as the A team lost only one game and the B team just two, one of which was against their friends of course in the A team.
The winners got a medal and everyone else a certificate which was well deserved.
Mr Slater said he couldn’t have been more proud of both teams, who had pushed each other hard in every training session and conducted themselves fantastically well on the day. What great representatives of our school!
Should the Spring term bring another tournament, all the children are very keen to carry on where they left off.
