Sports Ambassador Training
Three children from Churchtown along with children from five other local primary schools attended a workshop at Stanley High School where they received their bronze awards as Sports Ambassadors as well as listening to, and working with paralympian cyclist Rick Wadden.
Rick explained how his life changed due to the injuries he received after being knocked off his bike at the age of 5. Over the next 10 years Rick endured lots of challenges at school but never gave up and after watching a video of the Tour de France he decided that bike racing was for him. European and Wor medals followed but the Olympics was his main aim and injury meant he couldn't compete in Athens, he went to Beijing and then in London he won a silver medal (which he brought in with him) and the fact that after 4 years of training he lost out on a gold medal by 0.065 of a second is what is driving him onto Tokyo in 2020.
Rick then taught the children some games that hopefully they will be able to help deliver during PE lessons as well as part of the Sports Ambassador programme that will follow the children through all of their education from primary school to secondary school and even on to university.
