Year 2

In Year 2 we continue to provide children with a broad and balanced curriculum that allows for creative thinking and the development of independent skills. We aim to teach this through a range of fun and exciting activities, which underpin the learning of key skills across the curriculum. Furthermore, this year there will be a strong emphasis on the development of children’s mathematical and English skills, preparing them for challenge of Key Stage 2.

THemes

Innovative Inventions (Autumn 1)
Quality Text: ‘Grandpa’s Amazing Inventions’ by Richard Johnson

During this theme, the children will discuss a variety of modern day inventions and carry out research into the history of them.  We will discuss how ideas have been developed over time and who the people were behind the inventions, before creating some 'amazing inventions' of our own!

In Science, children will develop their investigative skills and will develop their knowledge of materials and their properties.

Superheroes  (Autumn 2)
Quality Text: 'Traction Man' by Mini Grey

This half term the children become real life superheroes, whilst reading all about the adventures of Traction Man! We learn about modern day superheroes and people who have inspired us and changed the world for good.

In History, we learn all about Guy Fawkes and through debate and discussion, decide whether we believe Guy Fawkes was a Hero or a Villain!

Amazing Adventures (Spring 1 )
Quality Text:  ‘The Snail and and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson

With a strong Geography focus, this theme has the children travelling far and wide on adventures with the tiny Snail and the Humpback Whale.  The children will study the wider world, including the five oceans, seven continents and various countries within them, as they learn all about Christopher Columbus and the adventures he went on.

In Science, children will continue to develop their investigative skills and will develop their knowledge of living things and their habitats.

Inquisitive Explorers (Spring 2)
Quality text: 'Ada Twist Scientist' by Andrea Beaty.

This half term the children take on Ada Twist's inquisitive personality and begin to investigate the world around them.
In History/Geography, we learn all about the Artic and famous people who have explored there. This is definitely a very interesting and icy topic!
In Science, the children continue their learning about Plants by completing lots of practical experiments with seeds and bulbs.

Beastly Beings (Summer 1)
Quality Text: ‘The Twits’ by Roald Dahl

This half term we read one of Roald Dahl's most famous stories in our English lessons and discover more about the life of a dirty, mischievous married couple called Mr and Mrs Twit.
We also look closely at Southport, England and compare our location with another place called Southport... in Australia!
During this theme we will look at the life-cycles of humans, plants and animals.  We will discuss healthy living and the importance of a balanced diet and exercise.

Near and Far (Summer 2)
Quality Text: 'The Magic Faraway Tree - The Enchanted Wood'

Home Tasks

In Year 2, we expect children to read at home with an adult at least 3 times a week. In addition to this, children are encouraged to read independently. This could also be recorded in the yellow reading diary, as well as any of their own books they read at home.

We aim to provide children with a range of homework activities to prepare for, or consolidate their classroom learning.  Homework will be given out on Thursday to be returned by the following Tuesday unless otherwise instructed. Homework will be related to the English, Maths or Theme work being focused on in school.
